Sports fans everywhere are mourning after the death of one of the most legendary New York Yankees to ever hit the field, Yogi Berra. The hall of famer passed away due to natural causes on September 22 – 69 years after playing his final professional baseball game. Anyone who ever got the chance to see him in action knows that there will never be another like him. Throughout his career, Yogi Berra won 10 World Series as a player and three as a coach. He was also an 18 time all-star, and one of the only players to earn MVP honors three times. While his skills on the field will never be forgotten, Berra also became extremely well-known for his funny catch phrases. Here are 10 of the most memorable Yogi Berra quotes.
10. “You wouldn’t have won if we’d beaten you.”
Yogi Berra was all about keeping it simple, and this quote on winning is just that. Sometimes when people win at something they get a little cocky and carried away. However, sometimes they could use a gentle reminder just like this one. after all, in most cases – there isn’t much that separates the winners from the losers.
9. “When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”
Lots of people struggle with making decisions. Things can get pretty stressful when you feel like your entire future is riding on one big choice. As a result, people tend to spend a lot of time over thinking things and while it’s always smart to think things through sometimes things are easier than they seem.
8. “If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”
This quote can easily be applied to something as basic as getting in the car and driving somewhere with no real destination in sight. However, it can also be applied to bigger situations. Of course it’s not possible to plan out every aspect of your life – but if you don’t have any type of end goal in mind, the end goal you end up with might not be something you’re okay with.
7. “Love is the most important thing in the world, but baseball is pretty good, too.”
Fortunately for Yogi Berra, he got to experience both love and baseball. Anyone who has ever gotten to do something they love and share it with those around them knows that there’s no better feeling.
6. “I never said most of the things I said.”
This quote may be short and to the point, but you’re probably still wondering what on earth it means. How is it possible to not say the things you said? Well, when you’re Yogi Berra, it’s very possible. He may also be addressing the fact that the media has a habit of misquoting or spinning the words of famous people in order to make a good story.
5. “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is.”
The debate between theory and practice is never-ending. While both are necessary, some will argue that one is more important than the other. However, as a professional athlete, Yogi Berra knew a thing or two about practice both literally and figuratively.
4. “You can observe a lot by watching.”
Here’s another one you may be feeling a little stuck on. After all, how can you observe something without watching it? While there may not be a real technicality here, Yogi Berra is simply saying that sometimes everything you need to see is right in front of your face, and if you give yourself a chance to actually see it – you might actually learn something. Go figure!
3. “It ain’t over till it’s over.”
Sorry fat lady, but your vocals won’t be needed anymore, because according to Yogi Berra – when it’s over – it’s over. For an athlete like Yogi Berra this idea was probably especially meaningful. One of the first things that most players learn is that you need to play hard for the entire game. Although it can be easy to slack off when you’re up or down by a lot, the best players know that the game isn’t over until well, it’s over.
2. “A nickel ain’t worth a dime anymore.”
Economics can be a pretty tough subject to understand. However, Yogi Berra has broken it down in a way that anyone can understand. At times when the economy is struggling, money doesn’t go as far as it once did, and while the face value remains the same – you’ll see that the things you were once able to buy with just nickels and times are slowly becoming unaffordable.
1. “Always go to other people’s funerals. Otherwise they won’t go to yours.”
Unless you believe in ghosts, there’s a good chance that none of the people whose funerals you attend will be at yours, but the message remains the same. If you support people during their time of need, they’ll be there for you. After 90 years of countless accomplishments, it’s now everyone’s turn to be there for Yogi Berra. When he is laid to rest next week, there’s no doubt that his funeral will be backed by those who loved him.
