21 Savage is opening up about his past academic highlights. During an interview with Shannon Sharpe on the podcast Club Shay Shay, the chart-topping rapper discusses his childhood and why stopped aiming for textbook success.
“I was an excellent student up until a certain grade,” detailed the “Peaches And Eggplants” rapper. “We was just talking about this last night. We was playing the game, and they was like, ‘Spell Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,’ and it was crazy cause I won the spelling bee in fifth-grade spelling that same word. And I won the math competition that same year.”
He continued to detail “So I used to get all A’s, but like up until a certain point. I feel like when I found out like really just realized, like, no matter how good I do in school, I can’t go to college because I’m an immigrant. I can’t get a job, I can’t get a driver’s license. I feel like once that started to kick in, I kinda just gave up and just stopped caring. I used to go to school fall asleep in class like just do all types of sh*t.”
As 21 Savage continues to be more open about his early life, fans who had hoped to see his story on-screen may be disappointed for now. In the same interview, the Grammy Award-winning rapper confirmed the recent viral trailer for his biopic was a part of his rollout for his latest album, American Dream.
The clip featured appearances from Donald Glover, Caleb McLaughlin, Gail Bean, Druski, Jabari Banks, Chad Lindberg, Victoria Pedretti, Young Mazino, and Natasha Lyonne.
“Nah, that was a parody,” explained the 31-year-old. “I feel like it could be one day,” 21 added. “They would hate on it now though. Because they gon’ be like, ‘[Why] the f**k 21 Savage deserves… a movie about him for? What he did?’ You know how they do.”
