Birdy is an English singer and composer who goes by the stage name Elizabeth Jennifer van den Bogaerde. She was born Jasmine Lucilla on May 15, 1996. When she was 12, she won the Open Mic UK music competition.
Her breakout track, a cover version of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love,” charted across Europe and earned platinum certification six times in Australia. On November 7, 2011, she released her debut album, Birdy, which has the same name.

Early Life
Birdy was born in Lymington, England, on May 15, 1996. Her mother is concert pianist Sophie Patricia (née Roper-Curzon), and her father is writer Rupert Oliver Benjamin van den Bogaerde.
After starting to play the piano at the age of seven, Birdy started creating her music at the age of eight.
She claimed that her tone was greatly influenced by listening to classical music and songs that her mother performed.
Her parents married in 1995 and have two other children, Jake (1997) and Caitlin (1999). She also has two older half-brothers from her father’s first marriage, Moses and Sam.
Birdy attended Durlston Court Prep School in Barton on Sea, Priestlands School, and Brockenhurst College, a New Forest sixth-form college.
She was raised on the family estate close to Lymington, Hampshire, by her maternal grandfather, Captain John Christopher Ingram Roper-Curzon, the 20th Baron Teynham. Sir Dirk Bogarde, an actor, was her great-uncle. She has Scottish, Dutch, English, and Belgian (Flemish) origins.
Her father’s stepmother served as the inspiration for Birdy’s middle name, Lucilla.
Career
Her mother taught her the piano when she was seven years old. She won the UK talent competition Open Mic UK in 2008 when she was 12. Open Mic UK is a spin-off of the talent competition Live and Unsigned.
She won the under-18 category and the Grand Prize out of ten thousand competitors. In the competition, she performed her song ‘So Be Free’ in front of two thousand people.
In 2009, she performed live on piano for BBC Radio Three piano than in London. She released a cover version of Bon Iver‘s ‘Skinny Love’ in 2011. The song earned her first UK singles chart hit, peaking at number seventeen.
