Earlier this week, Hilary Swank and John Campisi announced their split. They had been together since 2006, although Us Weekly and People Magazine both did weird things with the timeline of their relationship, claiming they had been together only “five years”. As I expounded upon in my previous post (go here to read my background), Hilary and John (her agent) got together in 2006 when he was still married, but arguably estranged from his wife. Campisi proceeded to drop his wife like a hot potato and move into a full-fledged relationship with Swank just a couple of months after she had left Chad Lowe. It was a sketchy move by both of them, compounded by Hilary’s constant discussion of Campisi’s son in interview after interview, which I often read as passive-aggressive towards Campisi’s ex-wife.
Anyway, In Touch Weekly has an interesting story on the real reason why Hilary and John couldn’t make it work – he wouldn’t marry her! And she couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t marry her after he dumped his wife for her.
Hilary Swank and John Campisi, her former agent, have officially ended their five-year relationship, which has been quietly on the rocks for months.
Swank, who spent the majority of the summer filming the TV movie Mary & Martha away from John, grew impatient waiting for an engagement.
“For years, Hilary was bugging John to get married,” a friend of John’s tells In Touch. “She didn’t understand why he wouldn’t commit to her after he dumped his wife for her.”
Once her pal Reese Witherspoon married and started a family with Jim Toth, who worked with John at CAA, a split was inevitable.
“Hilary would fight with John about it relentlessly,” the source says. “She was really upset.”

When I first heard that Hilary and John had split, my immediate thought was to remember all of the interviews she’s given over the past five years or so in which she spent a lot of time talking about how “traditional” she is, and she believes in long-term commitment, and she knows she’ll be a mom when the time is right. It did make me think… “Hm, I wonder why they never did get married.” Now I know. John Campisi doesn’t believe in marrying his jumpoffs. Props to Hilary for getting out of the relationship though – some women would have hung around for years longer, waiting for the dude to give them the ring. I’m not saying all women are like that, but if you know you want to be married and the dude is stringing you along year after year, I admire when the woman goes, “Yeah, I’m not getting what I want out of this. I’m done.”
