Hill Harper is an American actor, author, and politician. His roles include the films Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings, Get on the Bus, Steel (1997), Hav Plenty, He Got Game, Beloved (1998), Loving Jezebel, In Too Deep, The Skulls, The Visit (2000), Love, Sex and Eating the Bones, Constellation (2005), Premium, The Breed (2006), This Is Not a Test, For Colored Girls, Mama, I Want to Sing!; 1982 (2013), Parts per Billion, The Boy Next Door, Concussion (2015), Destined (2016), An Interview with God, and The Sun Is Also a Star; the shows Married… with Children, Live Shot, City of Angels, The Handler, CSI: NY, Covert Affairs, Limitless, Homeland, How It Really Happened, as the host and narrator, and The Good Doctor; and the made-for-tv movies Lackawanna Blues and Stonehenge Apocalypse. He is also known as Frank Harper and F. Hill Harper.

Hill is the son of Dr. Marilyn (Hill) Harper, one of the first black practicing anesthesiologists in the U.S., and Dr. Harry D. Harper II, a psychiatrist. His mother co-authored the book Wearing Purple.

He has a son, who is adopted.

Hill’s paternal grandfather was Dr. Harry Dandridge Harper (the son of George E. Harper and Rhoda Dandridge). Harry was born in Iowa. Rhoda was the daughter of Rufus Dandridge and Matilda Stevens.

Hill’s paternal grandmother was Lillie V. Grinage (the daughter of Francis M. “Frank” Grinage and Emma F. Jones). Lillie was born in Washington, D.C. Emma was the daughter of Jane Jones.

Hill’s maternal grandfather was Dr. Harold Eugene Hill (the son of David Riley Hill and Mattie Eugenia Seabrook). Harold was born in South Carolina. David was the son of Anna L. Simon/Simonds.

Hill’s maternal grandmother was Mamie Eugenia Ashmore (the daughter of Bishop Lane Ashmore and Ida Estelle Gartrell). Mamie was born in Georgia. Bishop was the son of March Ashmore and Frances Cobb. Ida was the daughter of Henry H. Gartrell and America Frazier.
