As Algee Smith continues to gain popularity following his role in the television show Euphoria, many people have been wondering if he is related to Will Smith. 

Although Will and Algee share the same surname, they are not related. Smith is actually the most common surname in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. So, it is not unusual that Will and Algee share the name despite not having any relations.

The Separate Smith families

Will Smith was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to his mother Caroline Bright and his father, whom Will got his name from, Willard Carroll Smith Sr. He also has an elder sister named Pamela Smith and two younger siblings Harry and Ellen Smith. Will also now his own family consisting of his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith and their children, Willow and Jaden Smith. Will was also previously married to Sheree Zampino and they have a son together named after Will and Will’s father, Willard Caroll “Trey” Smith III. 

Algee Smith, on the other hand, was born in Saginaw, Michigan to his mother, Tanesha Eley and father, Algee Smith III. Although Algee and Will’s families are not related, they followed the same naming traditions by taking their fathers’ names. Algee Smith also has a younger brother, Jonathan Eley and three younger sisters, Soteria Nisreen Eley, Gabriella Eley and Mei’asia Smith. Algee does not yet have his own family. Both Algee Smith and Will Smith’s respective parents got divorced when the men were young. Despite these similarities, the families have no relations. 

Acting Experience

Even though Algee Smith and Will Smith are not related, they do share a lot of similarities with regards to their careers as well. Algee Smith is a rapper and actor just as Will is. As Algee (born in 1994) is younger than Will (born in 1968), Algee had his first acting job in 2012 on a Nickelodeon television show called How to Rock. Will Smith had a similar start to his acting career as his first big acting job was on the 1990 television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. 

Both men used television to get into the movie business as Algee Smith had a role in the 2018 movie The Hate U Give and Will became one of the stars of the Men in Black series starting in 1997. They both show no signs of stopping either as they both have works in production. Algee Smith also said that Will Smith is his role model and he dreams to become as popular as Will someday. 

Musical Careers

Not only are both men actors in television shows and movies, but they are also musicians. More specifically, they are both rappers. Algee Smith actually started making music before he got into acting at the age of 9. He wrote and recorded a rap with the help of his dad who is also a musician. Algee is still a rapper and singer now as he released his first EP entitled Listen, in 2017. He has also performed a song for the film Detroit’s soundtrack called “Grow”.

Will is also a rapper and singer and has released five albums, 18 singles and 20 music videos. He has also worked on music for films as he released the Men in Black theme song in 1997. He is not as active in the music industry as he was before, but released his first single in over ten years, called “Get Lit”, in 2017. Will says that he would like to get back into it and has at least 30 songs already planned.

Despite the familial and career similarities Will and Algee Smith share, they are not related. Algee does look up to Will though and hopes to have the same successes one day.
