NEW YORK (VIP NEWS) — Roc Nation has signed an exclusive, worldwide management deal with Puerto Rican star Yandel.
The deal will encompass all aspects of Yandel’s career, including sponsorships. Yandel’s longtime manager, Andy Martinez, will continue to work with him in partnership with Roc Nation.
“It’s been three years of hard work to get to this point,” said Yandel, who rose to fame as one half of Wisin & Yandel, the top-selling reggaeton duo of all time. “Roc Nation has an army. I’m happy because this is what I needed. I have the music, but they have the muscle.”
For both Wisin and Yandel (real name Llandel Veguilla Malavé), staying a duo would have been the easy way out. The duo was huge and regularly playing arenas when they split amicably in 2013. Since then, both have worked to develop their solo careers.
For Yandel, who is signed to Sony Music Latin, it’s meant a series of small steps. Although his two solo albums, last year’s Dangerous and 2013`s De Lider a Leyenda, have debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart, his solo tours began in clubs. Last year, however, he had a series of high-profile opportunities, including an HBO special and a performance prior to the Pay Per View fight between boxers Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez in Las Vegas.
It was Cotto, who is also signed to Roc Nation, who took Yandel to the company. Yandel would be the first Latin artist besides Shakira to sign to Roc Nation.
“Honestly, I wasn’t looking for this,” said Yandel. “It came out of the blue. I really want my music to go mainstream,” says Yandel, who’s taking English lessons. “Latin is huge now, but I want another movement.”
